SAINT TROPEZ

Find all villas in Saint Tropez

Once a sleepy fishing port, St Tropez owes its worldwide fame to the French icon Brigitte Bardot, whose role in the 1956 film “And God Created Woman” made it the place to be for aspiring starlets and the men who adore them. Today it’s still considered one of the most fashionable resorts in the world. During the popular summer season, St Tropez’s population quadruples with an endless stream of celebrities, artists, paparazzi, and wealthy visitors who frequent the haute-cuisine restaurants, exclusive nightclubs, glittering luxury yachts, and the sweeping sandy beaches along one of the most beautiful bays on the Côte d’Azur. It’s a 24/7 party playground for the international jetset and those who can keep up with them!

In the off-season St Tropez has been called a ghost town, as many businesses close from November through April. However there is still much to see. Visitors can relax on the old port with its colorful Provençal facades, or stroll the charming old village without the crowds. Some of the oldest and most picturesque streets in St-Tropez can be found in La Ponche Quartier, between the port and the citadel, itself worth a visit for panoramic views of the coastline. Several museums recall the town’s artistic history, including the 15th-century l’Annonciade chapel which now hosts the Musée de St-Tropez and artworks by Signac, Picabia, Matisse and Dufy. The Provençal produce market takes place twice a week at the Place des Lices, while the fish market on the Place aux Herbes is open daily.

St Tropez still preserves many of its old traditions. Twice a year since the 15th century, two “bravades” or “acts of defiance” take place among the locals. The first in May involves a religious procession through the streets of St-Tropez in honor of the town’s namesake saint. The second one in June is more colorful and boisterous, with a costumed parade and historic military displays to celebrate the St Tropez militia’s victory over Spanish galleys that invaded in 1637. Other events include the September grape harvest festival from the village’s surrounding vineyards, and the sailing regatta in early October, which is considered the last big event of the “season”. In December the village is decorated in holiday lights and an ice rink created on the Place des Lices.

Nature lovers can enjoy the many hiking trails along the St Tropez Peninsula, soak up the sun on the beaches of Pampalonne, and partake in a number of water sports such as windsurfing and deep sea diving.
